Skype has now received a much needed update which hides your IP address by default. The move is essentially aimed at protecting the privacy of Skype users, as earlier users could see each other’s IP addresses -- a severe privacy violation.
Starting with this update, users’ IP addresses will be kept hidden from other Skype users. “This measure will help prevent individuals from obtaining a Skype ID and resolving to an IP address,” wrote Microsoft in a blog post.
The new update is primarily addressed at gamers, given the booming popularity of the online gaming space. In the past, vengeful gamers have managed to target other players’ computers by obtaining their IP addresses. A Skype community user has also detailed step-by-step guide to help users protect their IP addresses from being targeted
Users can download the Skype update for desktop as well as the mobile version via the official Skype website. Desktop users can head over to ‘Help > Check for Updates’ to get the new update, while mobile users can head over to their respective app stores and get the update.
Meanwhile, Microsoft has also been constantly adding multiple updates for Skype such as group video calling for everyone, which was earlier only available on Skype for Business. The Redmond giant has also rolled out the Skype Translator tool for its desktop app.
