SONY XPERIA Z5 3
THE GOOD:
- Great camera
- Fast fingerprint scanner
- Waterproof
THE BAD:
Sony just can’t stop making smartphones.
Just a few months ago there was a release of all-new Xperia Z3+.
Now, in a move some may find totally bizarre, the Z3+ has been superseded by the firm’s latest flagship – the Xperia Z5.
Whilst it won’t please fans that rushed out to buy the Z3+, there’s plenty who are going to fall in love with this new device.

When you unwrap Sony’s new call maker from its cellophane it appears little has changed.
Other than a new matte finish on the rear of the phone the Z5 keeps its classic Sony looks.

Sony has included a new 23-megapixel camera on the Z5 and this snapper is a stunner. In fact, industry test have revealed it’s now the camera to beat and we totally agree. Pictures are clear, crisp and, with the world’s fastest autofocus, you’re almost guaranteed of decent photos every time you hit the shutter. Sony also bundles a ton of extras with their camera including multi camera, virtual reality and face in picture modes, which all add a bit of fun to your photography. Videos can also be shot in ultra HD 4K quality with Sony finally solving the overheating issues that dogged this type of recording on its previous phones. Of course, all these videos and pictures are great but you need a decent screen to view them on. The Z5’s 5.2-inch HD Triluminos display is good, offering plenty of colour and decent contrast. However, it’s by no means the best in the business. LG, Samsung and Apple all have better offerings which is a disappointment from one of the world’s greatest TV companies.

Sony does redeem the Z5 with an awesome two-day battery life, speedy Qualcomm processor, Hi-Res audio playback and a fully waterproof design. The phone also has expandable storage, something Samsung has ditched, which gives users the ability to add a massive 200GB of extra memory. Another neat feature on the Z5 is the inclusion of a fingerprint scanner. Whilst this is nothing new, Sony has managed to squeeze it onto the side of the device which makes it super easy to use. Sadly, there’s no Android Marshmallow on the Z5 with users having to stick with Lollipop for now. It’s a shame Sony couldn’t include Google’s new OS on their phone and it could force Android fans to take their business elsewhere.

VERDICT: Sony has always made great smartphones and the Z5 continues this tradition. It’s solid, well built and has a market-leading camera. The waterproof design and having the option to add so much extra storage are also major bonuses and the new fingerprint scanner is a welcomed addition. The Z5 is clearly a great smartphone but sadly it lacks the excitement of some of the competition and it feels as though Sony has simply played it too safe. Avid Xperia fans will no doubt love the upgrades, but Sony may not have done quite enough to convince the Samsung and Apple faithful to ditch their trusted devices.
