Samsung is making its new Exynos processors with low-power 14nm chips and has gotten the attention of other chip makers as a result. Qualcomm now wants Samsung to produce the Snapdragon 820 using the same process.
The process apparently improves processor speed by around 15% and reduces power consumption by the same amount.
Samsung has utilised both its own Exynos chip and Qualcomm’s chips in Galaxy handsets in the past. This will however be the first time that Samsung will be making a competitor’s chip that will be built into smartphones.
There is room for these chips to differentiate though, particularly when it comes to processor cores architecture. Both Samsung and Qualcomm utilise a custom-core solution for their latest chips.
Samsung says that the Snapdragon 820 processor, which uses Samsung’s new 14nm LPP process, is expected to be in devices in the first half of this year.
