Facebook could start putting adverts in Facebook Messenger , according to a report by tech website TechCrunch .
The report was obtained by an anonymous source and includes leaked documents to support the claim.
If true, it would be another way for Facebook to make money from the free-to-use messaging service .
According to TechCrunch, the adverts will only appear in message threads that have been started with brands or businesses.
The social network has already reveled plans to allow businesses to use Messenger to contact customers and it's thought the adverts could rolled out in the next few months.
It would appear on the iOS, Android and Windows Phone versions of the Facebook Messenger app.
What's potentially more worrying is if Facebook decides to bring adverts into Whatsapp - the messaging app it acquired in 2014 for $19 billion.
Whatsapp recently dropped its 69p yearly fee and CEO Jan Koum insisted it wouldn't start showing ads.
"We all get these messages elsewhere today – through text messages and phone calls – so we want to test new tools to make this easier to do on Whatsapp, while still giving you an experience without third-party ads and spam," he said.
While TechCrunch approached Facebook for a comment, the giant social network wouldn't give much away.
“We don’t comment on rumour or speculation,” a spokesperson told the site.
Facebook launched Messenger as a standalone app in 2014 and the service has continued to grow.
It currently has more than 800 million active monthly users around the world.
