The FBI says that it has been approached by 'outside help' and shown a method to access the encrypted San Bernardino iPhone without Apple's assistance.
The FBI may be able to gain access to Syed Rizwan Farook’s iPhone without Apple's assistance, according to a new filing.
Federal prosecutors have sought to delay today's highly anticipated court hearing, as an "outside party" reportedly came forward and showed the FBI a method to unlock the phone.
The filing says that authorities need time to determine “whether it is a viable method that will not compromise data” on the phone. If it is, “it should eliminate the need for the assistance from Apple."
U.S. Justice Department spokeswoman Melanie Newman said in a statement that the government is “cautiously optimistic” that this method will work.
Apple has been publicly embroiled in a legal battle with the US government over encryption and access to the San Bernardino phone for the last few months. Last night at Apple's "Loop You In" event, CEO Tim Cook again spoke about the importance of protecting customer data.
Magistrate Judge Sheri Pym could rule on the government’s request to delay today's court hearing at any time. This latest development could mean that this lengthy battle is coming to an end.
