So-called first owners’ iPhones last only three years
After years of speculation, Apple has revealed that ‘first owners” £500 iPhones, iPads and Apple Watches will only continue to work for about three years, and Mac computers will only last four.
Though you might have expected this to be the case, it seems to be quite a surprising admission to make.
It comes as part of Apple’s new drive to show off its green credentials.
Apple are showing off their green credentials
‘Years of use, which are based on first owners, are assumed to be four years for OS X and tvOS devices and three years for iOS and watchOS devices,’ Apple said on the ‘environment’ section of the website.
It doesn’t take into account the recycling of devices, their reconditioning and their resale, but when you buy, say, a new iPhone 6S at £539, Apple expects it to last just a few years.
The introduction of fairly regular operating system upgrades has boosted the longevity of Apple’s smartphones. The latest, iOS 9, still supports the 4s, which was released in 2011.
