USA V UK: Who gets the best deal?

For years Brits have watched with envy as our friends across the pond have got their hands on the latest gadgets at a fraction of the costs.

And if you’re prepared to hop on an 8-hour flight and head stateside many products remain cheaper.

For example, an iPhone SE costs $399 (£275) in the US while Brits pay £369 and Acer’s latest laptop will set you back $599 (£413) in America – it’s a whopping €699 (£543) in Europe.

Although we clearly pay more for many of these latest lumps of tech it’s not all bad news for UK gizmo fans.

If you want a smartphone on contract you’re better off staying firmly in the UK.

Nearly all of the latest flagship devices will cost you more in the US.

In fact Apple’s new iPhone SE 16GB will cost you around £50 per month in the US compared to £30 in the UK.

If you want Samsung’s brilliant S7 edge smartphone it will set you back around £68 per month compared to £37 in the UK.

So it finally appears Brits are getting more of a bargain than our US counterparts.

Sadly, it’s not all good news if you have a smartphone contract and want to show off in front of the Americans.

Roaming prices when travelling abroad are still insanely high, especially if you’re travelling to the US.

These crazy charges can be as high as £40 for just 500MB of data.

ROAMING: Charges for using your phone in the US

What makes this roaming rip-off so shocking is when you discover how cheap data is in other countries.

Apple latest iPad Pro features an embedded SIM which allows any user to access local data plans.

And while testing Apple’s new tablet in the US, Daily Star Online discovered data deals for as cheap as £7 for 5GB of internet access.

The EU is set to scrap data roaming charges next year but these rules don't apply outside of Europe.

So enjoy your cheap UK smartphone contract, just but be careful if you want to use it a long way from home.
